At HHS, we offer the autonomy and support to be your best self.   Purpose:    The School Counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment. In order to coordinate comprehensive counseling program, the counselor must work closely with the other staff and administration of U.S.D. #489.   Responsible to:  Building Principal Qualifications/Requirements: A valid building-level/subject area license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education. Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with others, including the ability to communicate effectively with a broad number of audiences. Ability to manage job responsibilities and meet the established district outcomes. Ability to use district-identified computer hardware and software, and other district-provided technology as needed   Essential Job Functions: Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community. Work effectively with community organizations. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned. Support the value of education. Support the philosophy and vision of U.S.D. #489. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns. Consult with parents, teacher, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students. Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and student files. Assist with identifying students with special needs and make appropriate recommendations and referrals. Implement an effective program of educational and career planning. Schedule opportunities for students to visit with resource persons about academic and career choices. Maintain a current library of career information, and assist students in using the information, and assist students in using the information effectively. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques. Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures. Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.   Special Physical Requirements: Requires prolonged sitting or standing. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials. Requires some travel. Must work in noisy and crowded environments. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round. Other: Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor and in accordance with the provisions of the USD 489 Board of Education. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district. The employee shall serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
